The Cleveland Museum of Art has tapped August Napoli Jr., president of the Akron-based Summa Foundation, to lead fundraising efforts at the museum, which is in the midst of a $350 million renovation and expansion program.

David Franklin, who was named the museum’s director in August, said in a statement that Mr. Napoli was a well-known leader of development efforts throughout the country. He will start Dec. 1.

“I believe he is the perfect person to move us from the fundraising of the past to a culture of philanthropy that will secure our museum’s future,” Mr. Franklin said.

The selection of Mr. Napoli was the culmination of a nine-month national search. In his new role, he will oversee the museum’s fundraising, grand writing, planned giving, membership, corporate sponsorship and government relations departments.

Prior to his work at Summa, Mr. Napoli was vice chairman of institutional relations and development at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Summa spokesman Mike Bernstein said the health care system is looking to identify an interim replacement for Mr. Napoli and is working on a transition plan for his permanent successor. Mr. Bernstein noted that the departure wouldn’t have an impact on current fundraising efforts and would be “business as usual.”

Like most entities involved in health care fundraising, the Summa Foundation saw a decline in donations in 2009 but has seen a rebound after retooling its fundraising efforts. Summa officials recently told Crain’s they expect to exceed 2008 fundraising levels and already have received several significant gifts this year.
