Japan’s currency has gained nearly 40 percent against the dollar since the economic crisis erupted in the middle of 2007. And 8 percent of the yen’s gains came during the past week despite the devastation from the earthquake, the Tsunami and the ongoing nuclear fallout.

Of course Japan can’t control the natural disaster or the ramifications from the nuclear fall-out. It CAN, however, control the value of the yen. And with support from its G-7 counterparts it began doing just that yesterday morning in Japan when the Bank of Japan (BOJ) stepped in to reverse the yen’s upward spiral.

Will it work?

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel said Friday that removal of menthol-flavored cigarettes from the U.S. market would benefit the public health.

The decision, unveiled at a meeting Friday, amounts to a recommendation that the FDA consider removing menthol-flavored cigarettes from the U.S. market, although the panel stopped short of directly saying FDA should ban menthol cigarettes. The panel said it was concerned that young people who experiment with menthol cigarettes are more likely to become regular smokers than those who try regular cigarettes.

The FDA isn’t required to follow the panel recommendations, but if the agency does, agency officials have said it “would take years.” The tobacco product advisory panel recommendation will be part of a report on the public health impact of menthol the panel is required to submit to the FDA next week.

Menthol-flavored cigarettes account for about 30% of total cigarette sales in the U.S.

Tom Rowe: Was told by investigators the probe is done.

“This is the way the world ends/This is the way the world ends /This is the way the world ends/ Not with a bang but a whimper.” — T.S. Elliot

That’s how a four-year criminal probe into alleged wrong-doing at the State Compensation Insurance Fund has ended: With a very noticeable whimper.

According to an account in Thursday’s Los Angeles Times by reporter Marc Lifsher, the four-year investigation into “alleged conflicts of interest, self-dealing and misuse of hundreds of millions of dollars” at the San Francisco-based workers’ compensation insurer — an odd, quasi-public entity that is neither fish nor fowl — has ended with nothing to show for itself.

The Times reported late last year that the investigation seemed to be losing momentum.

The saga began in March 2007. State Fun

[Note: I apologize for the lack of a video and light posting this week. I've been sick like a dog and only just recovered ever so slightly. Speaking of which, do you notice how expensive over-the-counter drugs are at Shopper's Drug Mart compared to Costco or Wal-Mart?]

Food prices have been trending upwards already but we haven’t yet seen the kind of price increases that consumers in emerging markets have been experiencing. That may be about to change. The Globe & Mail reported that Weston is increasing prices on bread, cookies and cakes by an average of 5 per cent starting April 1 (Sorry, this is not an All Fools Day joke).

The Bank of Canada decided to keep interest rates level at 1 per cent. The Prime rate to which variable-rate mortgages and lines of credit are tied to remains at 3 per cent. I
