A research report titled Financial Literacy and Take-up of Government Benefits submitted to the Task Force on Financial Literacy contains fascinating information on what percentage of Canadians actually take advantage of Government benefit programs that they are eligible for.

- 4% of eligible seniors are not receiving OAS payments; this rate represents about 160,000 seniors and accounts for almost $1 billion of pre-tax benefits.
– It is estimated that 135,000 to 150,000 senious do not receive a GIS to which they are entitled. 80% of those who miss out on the GIS are women, particularly those who are very elderly.
– 55,000 eligible Canadians representing about 1.8% of the beneficiaries were missing out on CPP retirement benefits (HRSDC data from 1999).
– 95% of eligible families with children receive the Child Tax Benefit.
– Only 16% of children eligible for the Canada Learning Bond ($500 in the first year and $100 thereafter) receive it.
– The take-up of the Canada Education Savings Grant is reported to be 39.3%.
– Only 50% of households headed by individuals aged 55-64 and without an employer pension have an RRSP.
– In 2007, only 31% of eligible tax payers made use of their RRSP contribution room.

HOUSTON -(Dow Jones)- A prominent national law firm on Monday sued Chevron Corp. (CVX) and its legal counsel, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, for allegedly attempting to derail its representation of Ecuadorian plaintiffs in a multi-billion dollar environmental lawsuit.

Patton Boggs LLP, in a filing with a U.S. court in the District of Columbia, accused Chevron and its attorneys of “tortuous interference” in the relationship between the firm and its clients, indigenous groups suing Chevron for alleged environmental damage done by Texaco Inc. in Ecuador’s Amazon region. The case, being heard by a court in Ecuador, was inherited by Chevron after it bought Texaco in 2001.

Chevron, which denies the allegations of environmental damage, has conducted since 2009 an aggressive legal campaign to thwart the effect of any adverse ruling by the Ecuadorian court. The company, after obtaining through U.S.

THQ Inc. (THQI: Charts, News, Offers), a global video game developer and publishing studio dwarfed by publishing giants Activision Blizzard (ATVI: Charts, News, Offers) and Electronic Arts (ERTS: Charts, News, Offers), posted a disappointing loss of $14.9 million for the holiday quarter and announced the cancellation of several key revenue generating franchises, which caused investors to dump the stock in extended trading in a drop exceeding 10%. This massive loss was a far cry from its $542,000 in profit the same period in 2009. Its revenue fell 11.8% from $356.7 million to $314.6 million, which still missed the pessimistic analysts’ estimate of $315.8 million. Electrical contractors work on the new office space for Latham, Shuker, Eden & Beaudine LLP.

Last spring, attorney Peter Latham asked John Esposito from commercial real estate brokerage Studley Inc. to show him the top Class A downtown office buildings as a possible new location.

Orlando law firm Latham, Shuker, Eden & Beaudine LLP had been at the Bank of America Center building for the past 15 years. But it decided the 14th floor of the One Eleven building was perfect for its new home.

Latham wanted a premier location with a great view and proximity to the core of downtown, and the One Eleven building fit the bill.

But initially, the landlord stayed firm on higher lease rates than the law firm was willing to pay. Thanks to the tenacity of Lincoln Property Co.

Global media conglomerate News Corp. (NWSA) on Wednesday saw its quarterly earnings more than double from a year earlier on the strength of growth at its cable networks both in the U.S. and abroad.

For its fiscal second quarter News Corp. reported net income of $642 million, or 24 cents a share, compared with $254 million, or 10 cents a share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose by 1% to $8.76 billion, up from $8.68 billion during the same period a year ago.

“I am confident that the significant positive momentum from these businesses will not only continue to drive News Corporation’s growth for the remainder of the fiscal year, but also strengthen the Company for growth in the years to come,” said News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch in a statement.

News Corp. is the parent company of FOXBusiness.com.

If you turned on your TV in the last week or so, you almost certainly saw coverage of the protests in Egypt. Almost overnight, the media narrative moved from Washington to Cairo.

Unfortunately, much of the commentary I heard was not exactly helpful. The networks trotted out the same pundits they turn to for commentary on politics and Hollywood. Entertaining, but not exactly enlightening.

For instance, we didn’t hear much about why those people in the streets are so unhappy. I suspect their concerns are far more economic than political. That’s usually the case when countries enter such turmoil.
