Brazil’s economy is booming, and I can assure you, it’s not a bubble.

I am also certain that the vast riches being made are not a flash in the pan.

Let me tell you why I’m so confident.

First, because my family and I are in Brazil right now and I can see it with my own eyes.

This past Saturday night, for example, my brother’s grandson graduated from middle school; and we attended the ceremony in São Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city.

The prosperity and optimism in the hall was so tangible, I could practically touch it.

Friday, at a very different kind of ceremony on our farm, the sentiment was identical; and we see the same pattern in every city and ever region.

Second, I’m confident because of the robust construction activity all around us, the new superhighways in development and even some of the old roads — finally without potholes.

And th

A stroll through Gwinnett Place Mall shows that a similar portion of its storefronts are dark. And Union Station Mall — the former Shannon Southpark Mall in Union City — shut down in early November, except for its Macy’s and Sears stores.

While most shopping centers are fretting these days about how good Christmas sales will be, the season could prove critical for a handful of metro Atlanta’s malls.

Like many of America’s aging malls, some of these older Atlanta-area shopping centers — most are roughly 30 years old — have been struggling for years with sparse crowds and a dwindling number of tenants. Shoppers disappeared as wealthier families moved to other parts of town, and newer competitors such as discount retailers and open-air malls drew away traffic or desirable tenants.

Those issues have become more acute in recent years after the worst recession in decades, high unemployment and a crippled housing market shut down America’s shopping spree. As a result, th

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French finance minister Christine Lagarde said Sunday she welcomed the implementation in France of a European directive capping traders’ bonuses, known as “CRD3,” in a statement.

The directive, which completes the current legislation, was transposed into French law Dec. 17, and stipulates that at least 40% to 60% of bonuses will be paid to traders on a gradual basis over a minimum of three years, the minister said in the statement.

Half of the variable part of the traders’ remunerations will be paid in stocks or similar financial instruments while the prudential regulator will now be able to get banks to change their remuneration strategy if it is considered too risky, according to the directive.

In the digital age, we have apps for shopping, locating coffee shops, and renting movies — it’s a good thing, then, that some responsible souls took it upon themselves to develop tools to manage our seemingly un-trackable spending. Whether you’re looking to devise a comprehensive budget, make a savings plan, or simply keep track of mounting bills, the following six apps can increase your financial savvy tenfold — all with the click of a mouse.

1. Mint. Probably the most popular option for its ease of use, Mint.com has been covered by the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal among countless others. Mint is a free, polished, comprehensive budgeting tool that graphs trends in spending and sends alerts to your phone when bills are due and accounts are at risk of being overdrawn. Huntington Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: HBAN) has decided that the time has come to buy back the preferred stock it issued to Uncle Sam in order to secure $1.4 billion in capital under the federal government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program.

To help make that repurchase possible, Huntington has begun an underwritten public offering of $920 million of its common stock. In addition, Huntington plans to offer about $300 million of subordinated debt in a registered public offering. Huntington said the completion of the common stock offering is not conditioned upon the completion of the subordinated debt offering, and vice versa.

Huntington said it plans to use the proceeds of the offerings, together with other available funds, to repurchase all $1.4 billion of the Series B Fixed Rate Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock that it issued to the U.S. Department of Treasury under the TARP program, which helped bolster the capital position of U.S.

Way too many men have to look at themselves in the mirror every day with man boobs. It is rather annoying, particularly when going to the beach or the swimming pool! So what can the average joe do about it to make it better? A few small habit changes make a big difference in physique in due time. This is some great insight to move you forward.

The first step to take is a lot of push ups and bench press. These types of body motions are a key ingredient for getting a solid chest and will help provide some muscle to replace the fat with. Don’t put all your money on these exercises, but they will give you a pretty good foundation of muscle, which is important to losing fat. Once you have gotten rid of some of the pounds, you will notice it a lot.

Secondly, get at least 3 cardio sessions in per week. This could be just about anything. You can try out some yoga, plyometric exercises, or even just static state cardio. It doesn’t matter what it is, so long as you are working for at least 20 minutes and keeps your heart rate up. Thi

Kimmel, 43, got his start on the Comedy Central cable network co-hosting “The Man Show” and “Win Ben Stein’s Money.”

The once-married, father of two, was romantically linked to fellow comedian Sarah Silverman until their split in 2009.

It was a little disappointing to read Jon Cheavreau’s recent column in The Financial Post (See, Dynamic Funds leave index-hugging rivals behind, December 10, 2010). In the column, Mr. Chevreau praises Dynamic Funds for the many mutual funds that not only beat their peers but the index by a wide margin despite high MERs. Two of the funds in the list sport MERs higher than 4 percent. Performance fees are extra. Despite these sky-high fees, the funds handily beat the benchmarks. Take the Dynamic Dividend fund for instance. Over a 10-year period, the fund returned 7.7%. The TSX index returned 5.1%.

Mr. Chevreau who says he has imbibed the KoolAid of passive investing and exchange-traded funds asks if fellow index investors will eat crow along with him considering Dynamic’s past performance. My response would be that index investors have no reason to eat crow or any other bird. Whi
