Very often I am asked to design something for the titled people of this country. It is never a case of there is unlimited funds available, it is more watch every penny, and can you account for every drop of paint.

As one would expect there are forms to fill out in triplicate,and security measures are in place. I have several times had to sign a secrecy agreement, and promise not to photograph any interiors that I might design.

Of course discretion, is always a vital part of my work. I have to admit I would love it if I could reveal who my clients were, and show photos of my work. I do not need to to produce a portfolio, as my work is by recommendation. How could I show a photo of a farmhouse table and chairs laden with food , in the kitchen of a huge country house, or some expensive china, on a matching welsh dresser. It would be too personal, to show in the glossy magazines.

My work has never taken me into landscape gardening, I would not know a petunia, from an anemone, I like to admire a cultured garden, but to comment on one, or design one I would not know where to start. I tend to leave that to the experts, who seem to be able to charge a lot of money for knowing Latin names of common flowers in the garden.

My expertise has always been the interiors, choice of colors, and reflective moods. My work tends to always be in the capital, but my reputation for combining subtlety and flair , does take me out to the landed gentry,or at least the landed gentries wives. ‘Oh ignore him’, the wives say, ‘ He will not spend a dime’ ‘ He would live the way it was 400 years ago’, ‘Give me the bill, and I will pay you out of the housekeeping account’
